AnswerConnect vs an AI receptionist for contractors
AnswerConnect is the 24/7 live-receptionist brand with the unpublished price list. Here’s what contractors report paying, how its minutes compare with a per-minute AI on a plumbing or HVAC company’s calls, and the summer bill for three shop sizes.

AnswerConnect or an AI receptionist: which should a contractor pick?
AnswerConnect sells 24/7 live receptionists on minute plans; it doesn’t publish pricing, and the figures contractors and competitor guides report are about $350 a month for 200 minutes, a $49.99 setup fee and roughly $2.50 a minute after. That’s a reasonable choice for a shop under 60 calls a month that wants a human 24/7 without tuning anything. Above that, a per-minute AI at $49–$99 with 100–200 minutes and $0.25–$0.50 after costs a tenth as much in a busy month and books the visit instead of relaying it. When is AnswerConnect the better choice?
- Under 60 calls a month and you want a human 24/7 with no tuning on your side.
- Big tickets ($5,000+ first calls) where a human first contact raises close rate.
- A customer base that wants a person and will hold for one.
- Chat and phone from one vendor without building anything.
When is an AI receptionist the better choice?
- Volume. Over 60–80 calls a month, per-call or per-minute live pricing stops making sense; at 300 calls in a summer month the live-service overage alone passes what an AI plan costs for the year.
- Booking. You want the caller booked into tomorrow’s 8–10 window, not a message that says they called.
- After-hours and overflow. The AI’s marginal cost of a 2 a.m. call is a few cents.
- Your own calendar and texts. Confirmation, reminder, on-the-way and follow-up texts come from the same system that answered.
- Tuning. Fix a wrong answer once and it stays fixed.
What do they cost in a contractor’s busiest month?
Same three shops we use on every comparison, about three minutes a call.
| Shop | Calls | AnswerConnect (entry plan + overage) | Per-minute AI ($99 for 200 min, $0.25 after) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo electrician, Austin | 120 (≈360 min) | $350 + 160 × ~$2.50 ≈ $750 | ≈ $150 |
| 3-truck plumber, Houston | 250 (≈750 min) | $350 + 550 × ~$2.50 ≈ $1,725 | ≈ $215 |
| 6-truck HVAC, Dallas, July | 600 (≈1,800 min) | $350 + 1,600 × ~$2.50 ≈ $4,350 | ≈ $475 |
Can you run both?
Yes: AI answers first and books; anything it flags as angry, complex or “wants a person” forwards to AnswerConnect or to you. That keeps the live bill to the handful of calls that need a human voice and gives the 85% who say they prefer a person a way to get one. The reverse (live first, AI overflow) suits big-ticket trades where the first call closes the sale.
Texas notes
Whichever answers, any text it sends under your name carries your TDLR or TSBPE licence number in the signature, goes 9 a.m.–9 p.m., and stays a reply unless you have consent on file; ask AnswerConnect how they store consent before letting them text past customers. Texas is one-party consent for recording. The Texas rules page has the detail.
Questions owners ask
Why doesn’t AnswerConnect publish prices?
It quotes per business. The figures here are what contractors and competitor guides report; get your own quote before comparing.
Does AnswerConnect book appointments?
Scheduling is offered; ask whether the booking lands in your job software or a separate calendar.
Is there a setup fee?
About $49.99 is reported. AI plans usually have none; our GoHighLevel build has a setup fee that covers the call sheet, calendar and tuning week.
What does it cost a 3-truck plumber in summer?
Roughly $1,700 at 250 calls on the reported plan, versus about $215 on a per-minute AI.
Can I use AnswerConnect behind an AI?
Yes: AI answers and books; flagged calls forward to AnswerConnect or to you.
Is there a contract?
Ask; live services often want 3–12 months, and reported terms vary.
Does it integrate with Housecall Pro or ServiceTitan?
It lists integrations with common tools; verify the specific push on your account.
What about Spanish?
Bilingual receptionists are offered on some plans; most AI platforms switch mid-call. Test both.
Which sets up faster?
AI: hours plus tuning. AnswerConnect: a script, the setup fee and days.
