Smith.ai vs an AI receptionist for contractors
Smith.ai is the name most contractors hear first when they look for a live answering service, and it now sells an AI plan too. Here’s how its live plan, its AI plan and a per-minute AI receptionist compare on a plumbing or HVAC company’s calls, with October 2026 prices and the July bill.

Smith.ai or an AI receptionist: which should a contractor pick?
Under about 60 calls a month, or for big-ticket trades where a human voice on the first call closes the job, Smith.ai’s live plan ($300 a month for 30 calls, $11.50 a call after) is a reasonable choice. Over that, the per-call overage decides it: a 3-truck plumber at 250 calls pays roughly $2,800 on Smith.ai live versus about $200 on a per-minute AI plan, and the AI books into the calendar rather than relaying a message. Smith.ai’s own AI plan ($150 for 75 calls, about $2.50 a call after) sits between the two.
| Smith.ai | AI receptionist (per-minute plan, or a GoHighLevel build) | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry price (Oct 2026) | Live: $300/mo, 30 calls · AI: $150/mo, 75 calls (free tier: 25 calls) | $49–$99/mo with 100–200 minutes; GoHighLevel build: per-minute usage, no seat fee |
| Overage | Live: $11.50 per call · AI: about $2.50 per call | $0.25–$0.50 per minute |
| Who answers | Live: US-based human receptionists · AI: Smith.ai’s AI agent | AI, tuned to your call sheet |
| Books into your calendar | Scheduling is offered on Smith.ai plans; confirm whether it books into your job software or a Smith.ai calendar | Yes, into your calendar or job software by zone |
| Knows your prices and service area | What’s on the intake script | What you load, with a no-quote rule you set |
| After-hours | 24/7 on live plans | 24/7, no surcharge |
| Angry customer, warranty dispute | Live operators handle it well | Hands off to you or a live fallback |
| Setup | Intake script; days to a week | A few hours plus a tuning week |
| Spanish | Bilingual receptionists available; check plan | Switches mid-call on most platforms |
When is Smith.ai the better choice?
- Your average ticket is $5,000+ (roofing replacement, remodel, large HVAC installs) and a human first contact measurably raises close rate.
- You take under 60 calls a month and want a brand-name, US-based receptionist without tuning anything.
- Your customers are mostly older homeowners who hang up on anything that isn’t a person.
- Complex intake (legal-style screening, multi-step qualification) where operators follow a long script.
When is an AI receptionist the better choice?
- Volume. Over 60–80 calls a month, per-call pricing stops making sense; at 300 calls in a summer month the live-service overage alone passes what an AI plan costs for the year.
- Booking. You want the caller booked into tomorrow’s 8–10 window, not a message that says they called.
- After-hours and overflow. The AI’s marginal cost of a 2 a.m. call is a few cents; a live service’s is a per-call charge.
- Your own calendar and texts. Confirmation, reminder, on-the-way and follow-up texts come from the same system that answered.
- Tuning. You fix a wrong answer once and it stays fixed; a rotating operator pool doesn’t.
What do they cost in a contractor’s busiest month?
Same three shops we use on every comparison, about three minutes a call.
| Shop | Calls | Smith.ai (entry plan + overage) | Per-minute AI ($99 for 200 min, $0.25 after) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo electrician, Austin | 120 | $300 + 90 × $11.50 ≈ $1,335 | ≈ $150 |
| 3-truck plumber, Houston | 250 | $300 + 220 × $11.50 ≈ $2,830 | ≈ $215 |
| 6-truck HVAC, Dallas, July | 600 | $300 + 570 × $11.50 ≈ $6,855 | ≈ $475 |
Can you run both?
Yes, and some shops do: AI answers first and books; anything it flags as angry, complex or “wants a person” forwards to Smith.ai or to you. That keeps the per-call bill to the handful of calls that need a human voice and gives the 85% who say they prefer a person a way to get one. The reverse (live first, AI overflow) works for big-ticket trades where the first call closes the sale.
Texas notes
Whichever answers, any text it sends under your name carries your TDLR or TSBPE licence number in the signature, goes 9 a.m.–9 p.m., and stays a reply (confirmation, callback) rather than a marketing message unless you have consent on file; ask Smith.ai how they store consent before letting them text past customers. Texas is one-party consent for recording, so recording the AI’s calls for tuning is fine. The Texas rules page has the detail.
Questions owners ask
Does Smith.ai book appointments?
Scheduling is part of its offer; what matters is whether the booking lands in your job software or in a separate calendar. Ask for a demo on your account.
Is Smith.ai’s AI plan the same as an AI receptionist?
It’s an AI agent priced per call; a per-minute AI plan or a GoHighLevel build is priced per minute and wired to your own CRM and texts. Compare on your busiest month.
What does Smith.ai cost a 3-truck plumber in summer?
About $2,800 at 250 calls on the live plan; roughly $590 on its AI plan; about $200 on a per-minute AI.
Can I use Smith.ai as a fallback behind an AI?
Yes. AI answers and books; flagged calls forward to Smith.ai or to you.
Is there a contract?
Smith.ai plans are generally month to month; confirm current terms.
Does Smith.ai integrate with ServiceTitan or Housecall Pro?
It lists integrations with common CRMs and schedulers; verify the specific push on your account before signing.
What about Spanish callers?
Smith.ai offers bilingual receptionists on some plans; most AI platforms switch languages mid-call. Test both.
Which is faster to set up?
AI: a few hours plus tuning. Smith.ai: an intake script and a few days.
Which sounds better to customers?
A human. The question is whether the extra close rate on your ticket size pays the per-call overage.
