Google reviews for plumbers: catch the gratitude window

Nobody is more thankful than a homeowner whose sewage backup just stopped. Nobody forgets faster either. Plumbers who text the review link inside that window get reviews on a big share of jobs. Plumbers who ask “sometime” get three a month.

Short answer

How does a plumbing company get more Google reviews?

Text the review link from the plumber’s name within an hour of an emergency repair or drain clearing, the next morning after a water heater install, and after the final walkthrough on a repipe. No incentive, one reminder at three days, reply to everything within 48 hours. In BrightLocal’s 2026 data 83% of people asked leave a review; plumbers who automate the ask from the paid invoice typically see 10 to 20 new reviews per 100 jobs.

Why it matters

What reviews do for a plumbing company

BrightLocal’s 2026 survey says 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, 78% were asked to leave one in the past year, and 83% of those asked did. Nearly half (47%) want to see at least 20 reviews before they trust a rating, and 89% expect the business to reply. Plumbing is the fastest-deciding trade (about a one-day sales cycle per WebFX) and the most emergency-driven, so the homeowner is picking from the map pack with wet socks on. Review count is what they see first. In Houston, Dallas and Austin the plumbers at the top of the pack have 500 to 2,000 reviews, and plumbing leads run $57 (LSA) to $183 (search) each, so every review that lifts you a spot pays back fast.

The texts

The review request texts that work for plumbing

One ask, timed to the moment they are happiest, from the tech by name, with the Google link and nothing else to click. No incentive, no “if you were happy” filter.

1

After an emergency repair, within 1 hour

“Hi [First name], [Plumber] from [Company]. Glad we got the [leak / backup] sorted today. If you have 30 seconds, a Google review helps other [City] families find us when it is their turn: [link]. Thank you for calling us.”

2

After a water heater install, next morning

“Morning [First name], it’s [Plumber]. Hot shower this morning? If the new [Rheem] is doing its job, a quick Google review would mean a lot: [link]. Any issue at all, reply here and I will come straight back.”

3

After a repipe, after the final walkthrough

“Thanks for trusting us with the repipe, [First name]. Walls patched, water on, inspection passed. If you are happy with how the crew left things, a review helps us more than any ad: [link].”

4

Reminder, 3 days later, only if none posted

“Hi [First name], [Plumber] again. Just leaving the review link here in case it got lost: [link]. No pressure, and thanks either way.”

Timing

When to ask, by job type

Job type Best moment to ask Why
Emergency leak / burst pipe Within 1 hour Relief peaks fast and fades fast
Drain cleaning / sewer backup Within 1 hour, with the camera footage link The footage gives them something concrete to mention
Water heater replacement Next morning First hot shower is the moment
Repipe / sewer line replacement After final walkthrough and inspection Ask before the inspection and a delay becomes a complaint
Fixture / faucet / toilet Same evening Small job, short memory
Slab leak After the insurer has your photos They are stressed until the claim is moving
Replies

Replying to plumbing reviews

  • Reply to every review within 48 hours. 89% of consumers expect it, and the reply is read by the next 50 people, not the reviewer.
  • Name the job, not the stars. “Glad the water heater is sorted, thanks for having us out” beats “Thanks for the 5 stars!”
  • Negative reviews get a calm, specific reply and a phone call. Do not argue in public. Say what you will do, then do it. Most bad plumbing reviews are about price surprise; reply with what was quoted and approved, calmly, then call.
  • Never offer anything for a review. The FTC rule in force since 21 October 2024 bans conditional incentives, and Google removes reviews it catches.
Texas

Texas notes for plumbing review requests

The Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners requires the Responsible Master Plumber number on advertising and invoices, so sign review texts with “RMP [number]”; it also quietly answers the “are they licensed” question the next reader has. Water heater jobs in Texas cities need permits and inspections, so time the ask after the inspection passes, not before. A review request goes to a customer who just paid you, so it is customer communication and exempt from SB 140 registration under the November 2025 settlement; still keep it between 9am and 9pm (noon to 9pm Sunday) and include your business name.

Automated

How we automate plumbing review requests

1

Trigger from the paid invoice

Job marked complete and paid in ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro or Jobber fires the request at the right delay for that job type.

2

Tech’s name on it

The text comes from the technician who was in the home, which roughly doubles response in our client data.

3

One reminder, then stop

A second text three days later if no review appears, then nothing. No third ask.

4

Reply drafts

New reviews land in your inbox with a suggested reply that names the job; you approve or edit.

5

Monthly count

Reviews asked, received, average rating and reply time in one text on the first of the month.

FAQ

Questions owners ask

How many reviews should a plumbing company have?

Enough that a homeowner stops counting. BrightLocal’s 2026 survey says 47% want to see at least 20; in competitive Texas metros the top three in the map pack usually have 200 or more.

When is the best time to send a review request?

Within an hour of an emergency repair or drain job, the next morning after a water heater, and after the final walkthrough on a repipe.

Should the review request come from the company or the tech?

The tech, by name. People review people. Our client data shows roughly double the response when the text is from the person who was in the home.

Can I offer a discount for a review?

No. The FTC rule effective 21 October 2024 bans incentives conditioned on a review, and Google removes reviews it detects as paid.

Is it legal to text review requests in Texas?

Yes. The customer just paid you, so it is customer communication and exempt from SB 140 registration under the November 2025 settlement. Send between 9am and 9pm.

How many times can I ask?

Once, with one reminder three days later. A third ask annoys customers and does not add reviews.

Why do plumbers get fewer reviews than they deserve?

The gratitude window is about two hours and the plumber is already in the truck. Unless the ask is automated from the invoice, it rarely happens.

Should I include the camera footage in the review text?

Yes for drain and sewer jobs. A link to the before-and-after footage gives the customer something specific to write about.

Should I ask on a job where the customer complained about price?

Not right away. Resolve the price question first, then ask a day later if they are satisfied.

Do reviews help plumbers in Google Local Services Ads?

Yes. Rating and review count are LSA ranking factors, and plumbing LSA leads cost about $57 each, so a higher position pays back directly.
