Home-service companies in San Antonio

San Antonio sits at the south end of the hail corridor and the north end of the long South Texas summer, with its own electric and water utilities and a big bilingual customer base. Here’s what each trade in Bexar, Comal and Guadalupe counties should have answering the phone, and when.

Short answer

What makes San Antonio different for a home-service business?

Hail in spring, heat from May, and a customer base where Spanish on the phone is normal, not optional. Spring supercells regularly reach Bexar and Comal counties; the summer runs 100°F for weeks and the same ERCOT peak that set the 91,089 MW record on 22 July 2026 pushed every AC in Stone Oak and Alamo Ranch to its limit. CPS Energy and SAWS run the utilities, with their own permit and conservation rules. Under 3% of missed callers leave voicemail, and a large share of them would have preferred to speak Spanish.

San Antonio at a glance
Metro population about 2.7 million across Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe and surrounding counties; among the fastest-growing large cities
Cooling season May–September; long 100°F stretches; ERCOT record 91,089 MW on 22 Jul 2026
Hail season March–June; the south end of the Texas hail corridor; the 24–29 April 2026 outbreak reached Central Texas
Water SAWS runs year-round conservation and drought stages with watering-day rules; Edwards Aquifer levels trigger stage changes
Licensing TDLR for HVAC and electrical, TSBPE for plumbing; no state licence for roofing or landscaping
Local utilities CPS Energy (city electric and gas), SAWS (water); GVEC and PEC co-ops in the suburbs
Language Roughly two-thirds of the city is Hispanic; bilingual answering is a baseline, not a feature
Texting law SB 140 since 1 Sep 2025; consent-based texting exempt from registration

Local rules

What rules apply to San Antonio contractors who text and call customers?

  • Texting (SB 140). Since 1 September 2025 a text that sells is a telephone solicitation in Texas. Replies, confirmations and reminders to people who contacted you are fine; marketing texts need consent on file, and the November 2025 settlement means consented programmes need no state registration. Hours 9 a.m.–9 p.m. (noon–9 p.m. Sunday). Detail here.
  • Call recording. Texas is one-party consent, so recording your own AI’s calls for tuning is legal; we still add “this call may be recorded” to the opening.
  • Licence numbers. TDLR (HVAC and electrical) and TSBPE (plumbing) require your licence number on advertising and vehicles; put it in your AI’s opening script and your text signature so the system doesn’t create a violation your truck doesn’t have. Roofing has no state licence in Texas; irrigation needs a TCEQ licensed irrigator; pest control is licensed by the Texas Department of Agriculture.
  • Google Local Services Ads. Needs the licence, insurance and a background check on file; allow 2–4 weeks before the season you need it.
  • SAWS watering rules. Year-round conservation plus drought stages; give the AI a link to the current stage.
  • City permits. San Antonio Development Services runs mechanical, electrical and plumbing permits; CPS Energy handles meter and service work. The AI should set a “permit adds a few days” expectation.
  • Bilingual disclosure. If the AI switches to Spanish it should still say it’s an assistant and offer a person; the 85% who want disclosure include Spanish speakers.
What we build

What does a San Antonio setup look like?

1

Count a March month and a July month

The audit in March catches hail and the quote surge; July catches the heat.

2

Missed-call text-back in English and Spanish

Texts within 30 seconds, from a named person, in the caller’s language, 9 a.m.–9 p.m.

3

Bilingual AI receptionist with a storm switch

Office first in a normal week; AI first the day the hail stops or the heat record falls.

4

Season scripts

No-cool + elderly/infant routing; shutoff script; claim questions; SAWS stage link.

5

Five-touch quote follow-up, both languages

Fires on “Estimate sent,” pauses on reply, stops at touch five.

6

Reactivation in April and October

Three texts to the consented list, in the customer’s language.

FAQ

Questions San Antonio owners ask

Does the AI really need Spanish in San Antonio?

Yes. A large share of callers will switch to Spanish in the first sentence; an English-only answerer is a missed call with extra steps.

When should a San Antonio roofer set up AI answering?

By 1 March. Spring hail reaches Bexar and Comal counties most years.

Can the AI answer SAWS watering questions?

Only by pointing to the current stage; it changes with aquifer levels.

Do I need to register with Texas to text customers?

Not if every contact gave consent; the November 2025 settlement confirmed it.

What’s the after-hours share of calls in San Antonio?

25–40%, higher in summer for HVAC and after storms for roofing.

Which licence number goes on the texts?

TDLR (HVAC, electrical) or TSBPE (plumbing), in the signature, same as the truck.

Does Google LSA work in San Antonio?

Yes, and the suburbs (Schertz, Boerne, New Braunfels) are less crowded than the core.

What about military families moving in and out?

PCS season (May–August) drives cleaning and handyman calls around JBSA; a rate card and fast booking win them.

Can you help a one-truck shop?

Yes. A solo HVAC tech in Converse needs bilingual text-back and after-hours AI for about $150 a month.

How long does setup take?

A week to build, two weeks of tuning in both languages. Start in February.
