Home-service companies in Austin
Austin adds neighbourhoods faster than contractors, which means more first-time callers than anywhere else in Texas, and a summer that runs from May to September with water restrictions in between. Here’s what each trade in Travis, Williamson and Hays counties should have answering the phone.

What makes Austin different for a home-service business?
New customers and dry heat. Austin’s metro keeps adding subdivisions in Pflugerville, Round Rock, Leander, Kyle and Buda, so a large share of callers have never used a plumber or landscaper here and will hire the first company that answers; ServiceTitan’s data puts that at 78% of homeowners. The summer is long and dry, with 100°F stretches and Stage 2 water restrictions, which drives AC, irrigation and sod calls; and Austin Energy and the city’s permit system differ from the rest of Texas. Under 3% of missed callers leave voicemail.

When do Austin home-service companies lose the most calls?
Austin’s year is a long summer with a spring quote surge in front of it and a steady flow of new-homeowner calls all year.
| Month | What drives calls | Trades hit | What to have running |
|---|---|---|---|
| February–April | Spring quote surge; landscaping, irrigation, sod; hail risk | Lawn and landscape first; roofing; HVAC pre-season | AI in February with the quote-from-satellite workflow; storm switch ready |
| May–September | Heat; AC failures; drought stages; pool season | HVAC; electrical; pool; irrigation repair | After-hours and overflow AI; emergency routing; current watering-schedule link in the AI’s script |
| October–November | First cold fronts; heating checks; fall planting | HVAC, plumbing, landscaping | Seasonal reactivation in October |
| December–January | Occasional freeze (2021 and 2023 ice storm benchmarks); burst pipes; tree damage | Plumbing, electrical, tree and landscape | Surge capacity; shutoff script |
| Year-round | New-homeowner first calls; after-hours 25–40%; lease turnover for cleaning | All trades | Missed-call text-back + AI receptionist; 5-touch quote follow-up; fast first text for new-construction neighbourhoods |
What should each trade in Austin set up first?
| Trade | Austin pain | First fix | Guide |

| Plumbing (Austin, Kyle, Buda, Georgetown) | Freeze weeks; water heater and softener quotes in new builds | Shutoff script + AI; surge capacity | AI receptionist for plumbers |
| Electrical (Leander, Hutto, Dripping Springs) | EV-charger and panel quotes; Austin Energy vs co-op permit differences | Permit-expectation script; missed-call text-back | AI receptionist for electricians |

What rules apply to Austin contractors who text and call customers?
- Texting (SB 140). Since 1 September 2025 a text that sells is a telephone solicitation in Texas. Replies, confirmations and reminders to people who contacted you are fine; marketing texts need consent on file, and the November 2025 settlement means consented programmes need no state registration. Hours 9 a.m.–9 p.m. (noon–9 p.m. Sunday). Detail here.
- Call recording. Texas is one-party consent, so recording your own AI’s calls for tuning is legal; we still add “this call may be recorded” to the opening.
- Licence numbers. TDLR (HVAC and electrical) and TSBPE (plumbing) require your licence number on advertising and vehicles; put it in your AI’s opening script and your text signature so the system doesn’t create a violation your truck doesn’t have. Roofing has no state licence in Texas; irrigation needs a TCEQ licensed irrigator; pest control is licensed by the Texas Department of Agriculture.
- Google Local Services Ads. Needs the licence, insurance and a background check on file; allow 2–4 weeks before the season you need it.
- Watering restrictions. Austin Water’s drought stage sets allowed watering days; give the AI a link to the current schedule, not a memorised answer that goes stale.
- City of Austin permits. Development Services runs mechanical, electrical and plumbing permits; suburbs (Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville) run their own. The AI should set a “permit adds a few days” expectation and never promise a date.
What does a Austin setup look like?
Count a March month and a July month
The audit in March catches the quote surge; July catches the heat. Build for the larger.
Missed-call text-back on every line
Texts within 30 seconds, from a named person, 9 a.m.–9 p.m.
AI receptionist with a new-customer script
Most Austin callers are new; the AI asks for the neighbourhood and the builder on new-construction calls so you can group visits.
Season scripts
Watering-stage link for landscapers; no-cool + elderly/infant routing for HVAC; shutoff script for plumbers.
Five-touch quote follow-up
Fires on “Estimate sent,” pauses on reply, stops at touch five.
Reactivation in February and October
Three texts to the consented list before the spring surge and before the first cold front.
Questions Austin owners ask
Why do Austin companies get so many first-time callers?
New subdivisions: Kyle, Buda, Leander, Hutto and Pflugerville add thousands of homes a year, and those homeowners don’t have a plumber yet.
When should an Austin landscaper set up AI answering?
By mid-February. The quote surge starts before March in Central Texas.
Can the AI answer watering-restriction questions?
Only by pointing to the current Austin Water stage; the stage changes and a memorised answer will be wrong.
Do I need to register with Texas to text customers?
Not if every contact gave consent; the November 2025 settlement confirmed it.
What’s the after-hours share of calls in Austin?
25–40%, higher in summer for HVAC and in August for cleaning (lease turnover).
Which licence number goes on the texts?
TDLR (HVAC, electrical), TSBPE (plumbing) or TCEQ irrigator number, in the signature.
Does Google LSA work in Austin?
Yes; suburbs are less crowded than the core, so a Round Rock or Kyle service area can rank quickly once the licence and reviews are on file.
Can the AI handle Spanish callers?
Most do, mid-call. Test it first.
Can you help a one-truck shop?
Yes. A solo electrician in Leander needs text-back and daytime AI for about $150 a month.
How long does setup take?
A week to build, two weeks of tuning. Start in January for the spring surge.
