Why don’t Facebook leads answer the phone, and how do you fix it?
Facebook leads do not answer because they submitted the form while scrolling, forgot within minutes, and do not recognise your number when you call an hour later. The fix is a text within 60 seconds that reminds them what they asked for, followed by a call, a second text and a booking link. Businesses that do this reach 65 to 80% of leads instead of 30 to 45%.

What actually happens between the form and your call?
A Meta lead form is submitted in about eight seconds, often with pre-filled details, by someone lying on a sofa. They keep scrolling. By the time your office calls, an hour or a day later, they have no memory of the business name, the number is unknown, and the call is screened. They did not lie on the form; they simply moved on.
Three things compound it: the lead expected a text, not a call; your number is not saved so the carrier labels it “potential spam”; and your first attempt was the only attempt. The instant form settings page explains how form choices affect lead intent; this page covers what happens after submission.
How much does response time change the contact rate?
Ranges reflect Meta lead-form campaigns for dental, med spa, home services and real estate. The bottom row is where most unautomated businesses sit.
| First meaningful reply | Typical contact rate | Booking rate of contacted | Appointments per 100 leads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1 minute, automated text then call | 65% to 80% | 35% to 50% | 23 to 40 |
| Under 5 minutes, human | 55% to 70% | 35% to 45% | 19 to 32 |
| Within 1 hour | 40% to 55% | 30% to 40% | 12 to 22 |
| Same day | 30% to 45% | 25% to 35% | 8 to 16 |
| Next day or later | 15% to 30% | 20% to 30% | 3 to 9 |
What is the follow-up sequence that gets leads to answer?
0 to 60 seconds: text
Name, business, what they asked for, a question or booking link, opt-out. Sent automatically from the CRM the moment the lead lands.
2 minutes: call
From the same number that texted. If unanswered, no voicemail; the next text does the work.
5 minutes: second text
“Just tried to call. Easiest is to pick a time here: [link]” Many replies arrive here.
1 hour: email
Same message with a little more detail, photos or prices if you publish them.
Day 1, 2, 4, 7: alternating texts and calls
Short, specific, one question each. Different times of day.
Day 10: last touch, then long-term nurture
“Should I close your file?” gets a surprising number of replies. Non-responders move to a monthly nurture list.
On any reply: human or AI chat takes over
The goal of every message is a reply; the goal of every reply is a booked time on the calendar.
What changes when you fix it?
What else makes leads ignore you?
Unknown or spam-labelled number
Register A2P 10DLC and your caller ID name. Use the same number for texts and calls so the second contact is recognised.
No consent language on the form
Without it, texting is a TCPA risk and staff hesitate. Put the consent sentence on the form itself.
Generic first message
“Thanks for your interest” is ignored. Quote the offer they clicked.
Office-hours-only follow-up
Half of Meta leads arrive evenings and weekends. Automation covers the hours staff cannot.
Common questions about Facebook leads that don’t answer
Are Facebook leads just bad quality?
Some are, but most of the gap is timing. The same leads contacted in under a minute reach 65 to 80%; after an hour, 30 to 45%. Judge quality only after you have fixed response time.
Should I call or text first?
Text first. A call from an unknown number goes to voicemail; a text that quotes what they asked for gets read. Call two minutes after the text, then text again.
What should the first text say?
Their name, your business name, the thing they asked about, one question or a booking link, and how to opt out. Example: “Hi Sam, it’s Jo at Bright Dental. You asked about Invisalign on Facebook. Would you like a free consult this week? Reply with a day or tap to book: [link]. Reply STOP to opt out.”
How many follow-ups are too many?
Six to eight touches over ten days across text, call and email is normal for local services. Stop at the first reply, and always honour STOP.
Do I need consent to text a Facebook lead?
Yes. Add consent language to the instant form so the submission itself is the opt-in, and store the timestamp. See our SMS consent page.
Can an AI do this follow-up?
Yes. An AI chat agent sends the first text within seconds, answers questions, and books from the calendar. The AI receptionist makes the follow-up call. Humans step in on reply.
