How does call tracking work with Google Ads and GoHighLevel?
Call tracking is the practice of giving each advertising source its own phone number, logging every call against that source, and reporting which calls became customers, so ad spend is judged on answered calls and booked jobs rather than on clicks.
What is call tracking?
Call tracking is a system in which a business owns several phone numbers that all ring the same line, with each number shown to a different audience: one on the Google Ads campaign, one on the website for organic visitors, one on the Google Business Profile. When a call arrives, the number dialled tells the system which source produced it, and the call is logged with its duration, recording and outcome. The result is a report that says which campaign produced which calls and which of those calls booked.
A tracked call is still a lead that has to be answered. Google’s own data and every call report we have run show the same pattern: calls that ring out or hit voicemail do not call back. That is why the tracked numbers in our setups terminate on a GoHighLevel line where an AI receptionist answers when the team cannot, and why speed to lead is the metric next to cost per call.
What are the parts of a Google Ads call-tracking setup?
Four parts have to exist and be connected. First, tracking numbers: GoHighLevel provisions local or toll-free numbers that forward to the business line, one per source. Second, call assets in Google Ads (formerly call extensions), which show a number next to the ad and can use a Google forwarding number that Google itself tracks. Third, dynamic number insertion on the website, which swaps the displayed number based on the visitor’s source so a Google Ads visitor sees the Google Ads number. Fourth, conversion import: the call outcome, recorded in the CRM, is sent back to Google Ads as a conversion so the campaign learns from real calls.
Google can track calls two ways: with its own forwarding numbers on call assets and call-only ads, or by importing calls from a third-party system. The forwarding number reports call duration and can count a call over a chosen length as a conversion; it cannot know whether the call booked. The import from GoHighLevel can, because the receptionist or AI agent marks the outcome.
- Tracking numbers per source, provisioned in GoHighLevel
- Call assets and call-only ads with Google forwarding numbers
- Dynamic number insertion on the website by traffic source
- Conversion import from the CRM with the real outcome
Which call-tracking method fits which business?
Three levels, from the free Google option to full CRM attribution.
| Method | What it captures | Limitation | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google forwarding numbers only | Calls from ads, duration, caller area code | Cannot tell a booked job from a wrong number | Small budgets, first month of a new account |
| Tracking numbers in GoHighLevel | Every call by source, recording, AI summary, outcome | Needs number provisioning and A2P/voice compliance | Service businesses running more than one channel |
| Tracking numbers + offline conversion import | Everything above, plus the outcome sent back to Google Ads | Requires consistent pipeline stage discipline | Any account using Smart Bidding or Performance Max |
| Dynamic number insertion on the site | Attributes website calls to the source that brought the visitor | Depends on the script loading before the number renders | Sites where most calls start on a service page |
How do we set up call tracking with GoHighLevel?
Six steps, in build order.
Provision the numbers
One local number per source in GoHighLevel: Google Ads, Local Services Ads, website organic, Business Profile, Meta. In the USA the numbers are registered for A2P 10DLC so texts after the call are deliverable.
Point every number at one answer path
All tracking numbers forward to the business line with the AI receptionist as the overflow, so a call is answered regardless of which number it came in on.
Add call assets in Google Ads
The Google Ads tracking number goes on call assets and, where used, call-only ads, with call reporting switched on.
Install dynamic number insertion
The website shows the Google Ads number to paid visitors and the organic number to everyone else, based on the landing parameters.
Define call outcomes in the CRM
Each call is tagged as booked, qualified, not a fit or spam by the receptionist, the AI agent or the pipeline stage it moves to.
Import outcomes to Google Ads
Booked and qualified calls are sent back as offline conversions, so bidding learns from calls that became customers rather than from every ring.
Can you record tracked calls?
Recording is allowed with the right notice. In the USA several states require every party’s consent to record a call, so our default is a short recorded notice at the start of any call that will be recorded, and the AI receptionist states that it is an automated assistant. The transcript and AI summary that GoHighLevel produces are the working record; the audio is retained only as long as the business’s policy allows.
What does a call-tracking report tell you that clicks cannot?
The report shows, per source, how many calls arrived, how many were answered within the first ring cycle, how many were answered by the AI receptionist, how long they lasted, what the caller asked for and how many booked. Read weekly, it exposes the two failures that click reports hide: the campaign that produces many short calls from the wrong service, and the campaign that produces good calls at a time of day when nobody answers. The first is fixed with negative keywords and ad copy; the second is fixed with the answer path, not the ads.
Common questions about call tracking
Will a tracking number hurt my local SEO?
Not if the Google Business Profile keeps the main business number and the tracking number is used on ads and the website only. We never replace the number on the Business Profile with a tracking number.
Can Google Ads track calls without a third-party system?
Yes, through Google forwarding numbers on call assets and call-only ads. It reports call count and duration but not whether the call booked, which is why we add CRM outcomes for any account using automated bidding.
How many tracking numbers does a small business need?
One per source you want to compare. A typical setup is four to six: Google Ads, Local Services Ads, organic website, Business Profile, Meta ads and one for print or vehicles.
Does call tracking work with the AI receptionist?
Yes. The tracking numbers forward to the GoHighLevel line, so the AI receptionist answers overflow calls on any source, and its transcript and outcome are logged against that source.
How soon do outcomes show in Google Ads?
Offline conversions imported from GoHighLevel usually appear in Google Ads within a day of the pipeline stage change. Bidding uses them from that point, so consistent stage discipline matters more than speed.
What is related to call tracking?
- Performance Max for lead generation Performance Max is related to call tracking because a large share of its conversions are calls, and only tracked calls can be sent back as qualified leads.
- Google Local Services Ads Local Services Ads is related to call tracking because it charges per lead, most of which are calls, and disputes depend on the call record.
- AI receptionist The AI receptionist is related to call tracking because tracking only proves value if the tracked call is answered, and the receptionist is the overflow answer path.
- Google Ads agency service The Google Ads service is the hub for this guide: Search, Local Services Ads, Performance Max and call tracking are built as one account.
- Cost per booked appointment Cost per booked appointment is related to call tracking because booked calls, attributed to their source, are what the number is calculated from.
- Book a strategy call A strategy call is where we check which sources you cannot currently attribute and how many numbers the setup needs.
