Angi and HomeAdvisor leads not converting?

You pay $25–$100 for a lead, call back when you’re off the ladder, and the homeowner already hired someone. That’s not bad luck. The lead went to three to five contractors at once and the first to call wins. Here’s the 2026 math, why owners call it a scam, and the fix that costs less than one lead.

Short answer

Why don’t Angi and HomeAdvisor leads convert?

Because each lead is sold to three to five contractors at the same moment, and the homeowner usually goes with whoever calls first. Shared leads close at 10–20% across the industry; at $50 a lead and 15% close, that’s about $333 per booked job before you’ve driven anywhere. Contractors who respond inside five minutes close a far bigger share of the same leads. The leads aren’t fake; they’re a race, and most shops enter it an hour late.

2026 shared-lead numbers Figure
Contractors each lead is sent to 3–5
Cost per lead, HVAC repair $25–$75
Cost per lead, plumbing $25–$60
Cost per lead, electrical $30–$70
Cost per lead, roofing replacement $75–$100+
Cost per lead, landscaping $15–$40
Typical close rate on shared leads 10–20%
Cost per booked job at $50 and 15% about $333
Lead price increases roughly 8–12% a year
Setup fees / lead deposits $350–$500 (often waived) / $300–$1,500 up front
What owners say

Is it really a scam, like the forums say?

The thread titled “HomeAdvisor and Angi are the biggest scam in the trades” on r/hvacadvice has the numbers most owners recognise: “$3,400 on HomeAdvisor leads,” about 60 leads, 7 jobs closed, “the rest either ghosted me, went with a cheaper” company. That’s an 11.7% close rate and $486 per job, which is inside the industry range. It feels like a scam because the shop paid for 53 leads that someone else won.

Two things are true at once. The platforms do sell the same lead several times, do charge for some junk, and did pay up to $7.2 million in a 2023 FTC action over lead-quality claims. And the contractor who texts and calls the homeowner within five minutes of the lead landing wins a lot more than 15% of them. Owners who do both, dispute junk leads and respond instantly, report very different numbers from owners who do neither.

The fix

How do you respond in five minutes when you’re on a job?

You don’t; your system does. The lead email or app notification triggers a text and a call before you’ve seen it.

1

Pipe the lead into your CRM

Angi and HomeAdvisor leads arrive by email and in their app. An email parser or Zapier step drops each one into GoHighLevel as a contact with the job details in under a minute.

2

Text within 60 seconds

“Hi Karen, it’s Joe at Red River Roofing. Got your request about the hail damage on Angi. I can be out tomorrow morning to look; what’s the address?” Short, named, with a time.

3

Call within 5 minutes

Either an AI receptionist calls and books, or your phone rings with “new Angi lead, press 1 to connect.” The homeowner hears a human or a booking offer before the other four contractors have opened the email.

4

Follow up five times

Same 14-day sequence as any quote. Most of the four competitors stop after one attempt.

5

Dispute junk inside the window

Wrong number, out of area, already hired: dispute every one, the same day. Shops that don’t dispute pay 20–30% more per real lead.

6

Track cost per booked job, not cost per lead

$50 leads at 30% close is $167 a job. $50 leads at 10% is $500. The response system is the difference.

Keep or cancel

Should you keep paying for Angi leads at all?

Channel 2026 cost per lead Shared? Cost per booked job When it wins
Angi / HomeAdvisor $15–$100+ Yes, 3–5 ways $250–$500; about $167 at 30% close New shop needing volume now, with instant response in place
Google Local Services Ads $25–$100 per call/message No; you pay per real contact and can dispute $100–$300 Established shop with reviews and a licence on file
Google Ads (search) $45–$150 blended; roofing $200–$300 (owners on r/Roofing) No $200–$600 Trades with high tickets and a good landing page
Your own missed inbound calls $0 No Cost of answering: about $1.50 a call on AI Always; fix this before buying any lead

Order of operations for most shops: stop missing your own calls, then LSA, then Angi for volume with the response system on. Buying shared leads while 27% of your own inbound calls go to voicemail is paying $50 for strangers while ignoring people who already chose you.

Texas

Texas notes

A homeowner who submits a request on Angi has asked contractors to contact her, so your first text and call are responses, not cold solicitations under SB 140. Keep them inside 9 a.m.–9 p.m., which matters because Angi leads land at 10 p.m. too; queue the text for 9 a.m. and send the call then. After hail in DFW, lead volume on these platforms spikes and so does the share of contractors chasing each one, so the five-minute rule is the whole game for roofers in April and May. Our Texas texting rules page has the detail.

FAQ

Questions owners ask

How fast is fast enough?

Text in under a minute, call in under five. After an hour you’re competing on price with whoever called first.

Can I automate the first text from Angi?

Yes. The lead email triggers it. The text must come from your real business number with your name.

Do Angi and HomeAdvisor share the same leads?

They’re the same company since 2017 and the lead pool overlaps. Paying both rarely doubles your leads.

How do I dispute a bad lead?

In the app or dashboard, within the platform’s window (usually a few days), with the reason. Do it daily; it’s real money.

What close rate should I aim for?

Over 25% on shared leads with instant response. Under 10% means your response is slow or the leads are out of your area.

Is LSA better?

You pay per real call or message, not per shared request, and junk is easier to dispute. It needs a licence, insurance and reviews on file.

Should I cancel Angi?

Not before you’ve run 30 days with instant response and disputes. If cost per booked job is still above your margin after that, cancel; watch the 30–60 day notice.

Can an AI receptionist call the lead for me?

Yes. It calls, says who it’s calling for, and books the visit. Most homeowners take the slot.

What if the homeowner already hired someone?

Dispute it. And it’s a sign the other contractor beat you on time, not price.

Does this work for Thumbtack and Yelp leads too?

Same mechanics: shared, first to respond wins. The same text-and-call system covers all of them.
