Which schema markup should a service business use in 2026?
A service business site needs five schema types: Organization for the company, LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService for each market, Service for each offer, BreadcrumbList for structure and Person for the founder. FAQPage no longer earns a rich result but still describes the page correctly.
What is schema markup?
Schema markup is structured data, written as JSON-LD inside the page, that names the entities on the page and their relationships: this is an Organization, it provides this Service, in this area, and this Person wrote the page. Search engines read it to disambiguate entities and, for some types, to show rich results.
Skill Up Experts adds schema on every site we build, WordPress or custom, because it is the cheapest way to make the company, its services and its author unambiguous to Google and to AI answer engines. Google’s May 2026 guide on generative AI features says no special schema is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode, so the markup exists for entity clarity, not as a ranking trick.
Which schema type does what for a service business?
| Type | What it describes | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Organization | The company: name, logo, founder, contact, sameAs profiles, areas served | Every page, one node with a stable @id |
| Service | One offer: name, provider, area served, description | Each service page and each industry-specific service page |
| BreadcrumbList | The page’s position in the site hierarchy | Every page below the home page |
| Person | The founder or author: name, profile URL, sameAs | About page, author profile, every guide as author |
| WebPage and WebSite | The page and the site as entities that the others point to | Every page, generated once |
| FAQPage | Question and answer pairs on the page | Guides with an FAQ section; no rich result since 7 May 2026 |
What changed with FAQ schema in 2026?
Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search on 7 May 2026 and removed the FAQPage documentation the following month. The markup is still valid schema.org and still tells a crawler that the page contains question and answer pairs, so we keep it on guides, but it earns no extra space in results.
The practical rule is that the visible FAQ text matters more than the markup: the questions are headings, the answers are plain HTML in the page, and nothing is hidden behind a click.
What are the common schema mistakes on service sites?
The common mistakes are claiming what is not true and duplicating what is. A LocalBusiness with an invented address, a Service type on a page that sells nothing, five different Organization nodes with different names, or review markup for reviews that are not on the page all create the wrong entity picture or a spam risk.
- LocalBusiness with a virtual office or no real address
- AggregateRating without visible reviews on the page
- Different organization names across pages, for example a trading name and a legal name
- Schema generated by two plugins at once, producing conflicting nodes
- Markup that describes content the page does not visibly contain
How do we add schema to a site?
One graph per page, generated from the same content that renders the page.
Define the entities
Company name, founder, services, markets and their real facts, agreed once and reused everywhere.
Generate the graph
Organization, WebSite, WebPage, BreadcrumbList and the page-specific type are emitted together with stable @id values.
Connect the nodes
Service points to the Organization as provider; Person points to the Organization as employer; pages point to both.
Validate
Google’s Rich Results Test and the schema.org validator on every template before launch.
Keep it in sync
When a phone number, founder profile or service changes, the graph changes with it because it is rendered from the same data.
Common questions about schema markup
Does schema markup improve rankings?
Not directly. Schema clarifies which entities a page is about and enables certain rich results. Google states that no special structured data is required for its AI features. The gain is fewer misunderstandings about who you are and what you offer, which is what entity-based search rewards.
Should I keep FAQPage schema after the May 2026 change?
Yes if the page has a real FAQ. It still describes the content accurately and costs nothing. Expect no rich result from it, and never add FAQ blocks only for the markup.
Can a plugin do this on WordPress?
Rank Math or similar plugins generate the Organization, WebSite, Breadcrumb and basic page types well. Service and Person details usually need configuring, and any page-level JSON-LD we add is designed to share the plugin’s @id values so the graph does not duplicate.
Do I need LocalBusiness if I work remotely?
Use ProfessionalService with areaServed for each market and skip the postal address unless one exists. Claiming an address you do not occupy is the mistake to avoid, and Google Business Profile has the same rule.
How do I check my schema is valid?
Run the page through Google’s Rich Results Test and the schema.org validator, then view the page source to confirm one graph per page. We do this on every template before launch and after any change to company details.
