What is UGC advertising and how do you produce it for TikTok and Meta?
UGC advertising is the use of user-generated-content style video, made by a creator or a customer in a native phone format, as the creative in paid TikTok and Meta campaigns instead of studio-produced ads.
What is UGC advertising?
UGC advertising is paid media that uses creator-made or customer-made video as the ad. The video is shot on a phone, in a home, a car or a shop, and speaks to the camera the way a friend would recommend a service. On TikTok it runs through Spark Ads from the creator’s own account or as an in-feed ad from the brand’s account; on Meta it runs as a Reels or feed ad. The format works because it matches what people are already watching, so it earns attention that a polished commercial is skipped over.
A UGC ad produces a lead in the same way any other ad does: a form, a call or a DM. The lead is worth as much as the reply time behind it, which is why every UGC campaign we run lands its leads in a speed to lead sequence in GoHighLevel rather than in an inbox that is checked twice a day.
What kinds of UGC do service businesses use?
Four kinds cover most service-business campaigns. Testimonial UGC: a real customer describes the problem and the outcome, filmed after a job with permission. Creator UGC: a paid creator, briefed by the agency, plays a customer or an explainer, disclosed as an ad. Founder or team UGC: the owner or a technician talks to camera from the job site, which is the cheapest and often the most trusted. Demonstration UGC: the process shown in real time, such as a duct cleaning or a whitening session, with a short hook and a call to action.
For ecommerce the same four exist with unboxing and try-on replacing the job-site formats. The choice depends on what the buyer needs to believe: that the service works, that the people are real, or that the price is fair.
- Testimonial: real customer, filmed with written permission
- Creator: paid, briefed, disclosed as an ad
- Founder or technician: from the job site, lowest cost
- Demonstration: the process shown in 15 to 30 seconds
What goes into a UGC brief?
A creator can only deliver what the brief asks for. Each row is a field in the brief we send.
| Brief field | What it specifies | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Hook (first 2 seconds) | The line or visual that stops the scroll, three options | Most drop-off happens before the third second |
| Problem and outcome | What the customer had, what changed | The only argument the ad makes |
| Proof | What the creator can truthfully say, with substantiation | FTC rules apply to claims in creator videos |
| Format | 9:16 vertical, 15 to 30 seconds, captions on, no music rights issues | Each platform’s placements and sound-off viewing |
| Variations | Three hooks, two endings, two lengths | Feeds creative testing and Advantage+ or Smart Creative |
| Disclosure | #ad or paid-partnership label, spoken or on screen | Required by the FTC Endorsement Guides and platform policy |
| Rights | Usage term, platforms, whitelisting permission | Determines whether the video can run as a Spark Ad from the creator’s handle |
| Call to action | Form, call, DM or booking link | Matches the follow-up path in GoHighLevel |
How do we produce and launch UGC ads?
Six steps from brief to campaign.
Choose the argument
One problem, one outcome, one proof point that can be substantiated. Everything else is cut.
Source the creator or customer
A paid creator from a vetted list, or a customer who has agreed in writing, or the founder. Each gets the same brief.
Film the variations
Three hooks, two endings, vertical, captions burned in, delivered within a week.
Clear rights and disclosure
Written usage rights for the term and platforms agreed; disclosure added in the video and in the caption.
Launch as a test
On TikTok as Spark Ads where the creator allows whitelisting, on Meta as Reels; four variations against each other on cost per qualified lead.
Route and report
Leads land in GoHighLevel, get the first message within the minute, and the weekly report shows which video produced booked appointments.
What are the disclosure and rights rules for UGC?
In the USA the FTC Endorsement Guides require that any material connection between the creator and the business is disclosed clearly and conspicuously, and that claims in the video are ones the business can substantiate. TikTok and Meta both provide paid-partnership labels that satisfy the platform side of the requirement; the spoken or on-screen disclosure satisfies the viewer side. Rights are separate from disclosure: a creator owns the video unless the agreement transfers or licenses it, so the usage term, the platforms and whitelisting permission are written before filming.
How does the same UGC run on TikTok and Meta?
The same vertical video runs on both, but the mechanics differ. On TikTok, Spark Ads boost the creator’s organic post from their own handle with their permission code, keeping the comments, likes and profile link, which is where UGC performs best. On Meta the video runs from the business’s page as a Reels or feed ad, and the paid-partnership label can credit the creator. Creative testing is the same on both: hooks are compared on cost per qualified lead, and the winner is scaled while the losers are documented.
Common questions about UGC advertising
Do I need a professional creator, or can my team film it?
Founder and technician videos from the job site are often the best-performing UGC for a service business because they are obviously real. Paid creators are used when the team cannot film consistently or when a customer voice is needed.
Does UGC have to be disclosed as an ad?
Yes when the creator was paid or given anything of value.
Can I use a customer’s video from their own account?
Only with their written permission and, on TikTok, their Spark Ads authorisation code. Reposting without permission is a rights problem and a platform policy violation.
How many videos does a campaign need?
A test round is three hooks by two endings, so six cuts from one shoot. A running campaign needs new hooks every few weeks as the audience tires of the current ones.
Does UGC work for clinics and regulated services?
Yes, with limits. Patient testimonials need consent and, in the USA, HIPAA-aware handling; claims about outcomes need substantiation. Founder explainers and process demonstrations avoid most of the risk.
What is related to UGC advertising?
- TikTok Spark Ads Spark Ads is related to UGC because it is the format that runs a creator’s video from their own handle, which is where UGC performs best on TikTok.
- Creative testing on Meta Creative testing is related to UGC because the hooks and endings in a UGC brief are the variations the test compares.
- TikTok Ads agency service The TikTok Ads service is the hub for this guide: creative, Spark Ads, lead forms and follow-up are run as one campaign.
- Cost per booked appointment Cost per booked appointment is related to UGC because it is the number that decides which video wins the test.
- Book a strategy call A strategy call is where we decide which UGC type fits your business and who should be on camera.
