Paid search vs paid social: which one for a service business?
Paid search (Google) comes first if customers search for your service when they need it. Paid social (Meta, TikTok, Snapchat) comes first if customers need to be shown why they want it. Most service businesses end up running both, connected to one follow-up system.
What is the difference between paid search and paid social?
Paid search is advertising to people who have typed a need into Google: “emergency plumber near me”, “dentist open Saturday”, “estate agent valuation”. The ad answers a question the person is already asking, so intent is high and the cost per click is higher.
Paid social is advertising to people who did not ask. Meta, TikTok and Snapchat show the ad based on who the person is and what they engage with. Intent is lower, reach is wider, and the ad has to create the want in the first seconds.
Both produce a lead that enters the same GoHighLevel pipeline and is answered by the same automation. The channel decides how many leads and how warm; the follow-up decides how many book.
Which channel comes first in each industry?
| Industry | First channel | Why | Second channel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emergency home services (plumbing, HVAC, electrical) | Paid search + Local Services Ads | The customer searches at the moment of need | Meta for maintenance plans and seasonal offers |
| Dental and medical clinics | Paid search | New patients search by location and insurance | Meta for cosmetic and elective treatments |
| Med spa and aesthetics | Paid social | Treatments are visual and elective | Search for branded and treatment-name queries |
| Real estate | Paid social | Listings and lifestyle create desire; portals own search | Search for valuation and agent-name queries |
| Ecommerce | Paid social | Products are discovered, not searched, until the brand is known | Google Shopping once demand exists |
| Fitness, salons, restaurants | Paid social | Visual, local, impulse | Search for branded queries |
| Legal, accounting, B2B services | Paid search | Bought when a problem appears, by people who research | LinkedIn or Meta for retargeting |
Which channel is cheaper?
Neither is cheaper on its own; they are priced differently. Paid search charges more per click because the click is worth more; paid social charges less per click because most clicks are curiosity. The only comparable number is cost per booked appointment, which we calculate from campaign spend and the appointments recorded in GoHighLevel.
A common outcome for service businesses is that search produces fewer leads at a higher price per lead but a lower cost per booked appointment, because the leads already wanted the service. Social produces more leads at a lower price per lead but needs faster and longer follow-up to reach the same booked cost.

Which signals point to search first?
Tick these. Three or more means Google first.
- Customers search for your service by name when they need it
- Timing is urgent (a leak, a toothache, a missed tax deadline)
- You can answer the phone or let the AI answer it within seconds
- Your service area is defined and you want leads only from inside it
- You qualify for Local Services Ads in the US
- Your offer is standard enough that a search ad can state it in one line
How do search and social work as one system?
The order most service businesses follow.
Capture with search
Google Search and, where eligible, Local Services Ads take the demand that already exists in your area.
Retarget with social
People who clicked, called or visited but did not book see Meta or TikTok ads for the next few weeks.
Create with social
Once search is stable, social campaigns introduce the service to people who were not looking yet.
Answer everything the same way
Every lead from both channels lands in GoHighLevel, is answered within a minute, followed up until it books and reported as cost per booked appointment.
Common questions about search versus social
Can I run both from day one?
You can if the budget covers a learning phase for each and the follow-up is automated. Most owners get better results starting with the channel that matches how their customers buy, then adding the second in month two.
Why are my Meta leads worse than my Google leads?
They are colder, not worse. A Meta lead did not search; it responded to an ad. Answered within a minute and followed up for two weeks, social leads book at a rate close to search leads. Answered the next morning, they do not.
Is Google Shopping paid search or paid social?
Paid search. Shopping ads appear for product searches. For ecommerce brands it usually comes after Meta and TikTok, once people search for the brand or product by name.
What about Snapchat?
Paid social, with strong reach among younger audiences.
How do you report the two together?
One weekly report with cost per booked appointment per channel, calculated from spend and the appointments recorded in GoHighLevel. Budget moves to whichever channel books cheaper for you.
What is related to paid search versus paid social?
- Which ad platform is best for a service business? The platform comparison is related because it goes one level deeper, choosing between Meta, Google, TikTok and Snapchat by industry and market.
- Cost per booked appointment Cost per booked appointment is related because it is the only number on which search and social can be compared fairly.
- Google Local Services Ads Local Services Ads are related because they are the strongest form of paid search for eligible US service businesses.
- All services The services index is related because both channels are run there as parts of one system.
- Book a strategy call The call is related because we tell you which channel comes first for your business and why.
